The Stars Have Withdrawn Their ShiningThe Stars Have Withdrawn Their Shining Ref: SM0682
Michael Stimpson
The Stars Have Withdrawn Their Shining, is connected with the 19th century artist, critic, philosopher, and reformer, John Ruskin (1819-1900). The piece itself follows the form of a sonatina, three movements in all, but in reality it is more a reflection of Ruskin’s life than a musical structure. Throughout, there is a somewhat ethereal and even innocent quality, but this is counter-balanced by elements of trouble and conflict, much of which was found in his personal life. This is most evident in the second movement where a connection is made with Rose La Touche, a young girl with whom Ruskin fell deeply in love, a relationship which ultimately ended in tragedy. The title is taken from a biblical reference seen in a late work of Ruskin, ‘The light shall be darkened in the heavens thereof, and the stars shall withdraw their shining’. During preparation of the piece, I soon became aware of Ruskin’s consciousness of the environment and his ecological thought, and with my own pessimism regarding environmental issues already firmly established, I felt it appropriate to amend the reference for this work. Premiered by Sioned Williams at the Purcell Room on February 10th 2001.

The Drowning of Capel CelynThe Drowning of Capel Celyn Ref: SM0514
Michael Stimpson
Capel Celyn, a village near Bala in North Wales, was flooded in 1965 to create a reservoir for Liverpool. People were devastated as the water rushed into the valley, drowning the Chapel, Quaker Meeting House, the Post Office, and a number of cottages. There had been considerable protests, including the bombing of a transformer on the site of the dam structure, and in many respects the controversy had wider and longer-term consequences. I wrote this work to mark the 50th anniversary of the flooding in 2015, as well as the 60th birthday of Sioned Williams.

PERFORMING SCORE
The song cycle, Dylan, is a chronological account of the life of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Each song is preceded by a short spoken text, and these, together with the words used for the songs, date as closely as possible to the period and subject matter in question. Many of the striking elements of Dylan’s life are included: the controversy of his character, poverty, alcoholism, the tempestuous relationship with his wife Caitlin, America, and of course his remarkable ability to write and speak so astutely and evocatively

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - City of London Choir

The environment and climate change is at the heart of this magnificent recording of The Angry Garden by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and City of London Choir, conductor Hilary Davan Wetton. With a beautifully poignant libretto by poet and author Simon Rae, and enhanced by four outstanding soloists, this five-movement work explores the world from its creation through to its potential destruction by human action. Silvered Night, for piano and orchestra and featuring an exhilarating performance from one of the UK’s leading pianists, Mark Bebbington, is based on a work for solo piano to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.
