This book features some of Karen’s favourite tunes, along with some of her own compositions. The pieces are arranged for elementary to intermediate gut or lever harp players, with grace notes written in as Karen plays them, and some suggestions for fingering and playing tunes in sets. Stories about the tunes or where Karen got them from give context to the pieces and can help inform repertoire choices and introductions. This varied selection is mostly Scottish with tunes from the Eliza Ross ms., the Straloch lute ms., the Angus Fraser collection, pipe strathspeys, an Irish jig learnt from Cathal McConnell, a Northumbrian air learnt from playing with The Whistlebinkies, a Church of Scotland hymn, and others learnt over the years from various players, sessions and travels.

This book contains 16 tunes, written over the years in traditional style and arranged for wire-strung harp. There are slow airs, a waltz, a jig, marches, strathspeys, reels, and a variation set. Some of the tunes were written for Beatrix Potter characters, for students and friends, and for a tortoise. Other tunes celebrate the seasons, the full moon, moving house, and life’s challenges and joys. Everything is playable in a C tuning. Some tunes have two versions, for smaller or larger harps, and are written down from Karen’s performance repertoire. Grace notes, fingerings and dampings are included. Techniques and abbreviations are explained, and there are performance notes and information on each tune.

This book is intended for beginners on the wire-strung harp or clarsach. It uses fixed hand positions - where the same finger always plays the same string and the hand is anchored on the strings - to learn damping, co-ordination, and how to create a good tone without buzzing. It also starts to explore adding supporting bass notes to enhance the harmony arising out of the tune. Thumb slides are introduced, along with the idea of expanding the fixed position with the thumbs playing more than one note, and sharing the same note between both hands. Everything is playing on a 19 string instrument starting on G below middle C.
Seven exercises lead onto Fair Molly, noted by Bunting as the first tune taught to harpers, two new tunes by Karen, and three more familiar pieces to play.

This book contains 20 traditional tunes - jigs, slip jigs, marches, reels, Carolan tunes, Gaelic and Scots songs, a strathspey and a hornpipe. They are all popular at sessions, especially at harp festivals in Scotland. Arrangements focus on playing the tunes strongly on a wire-strung harp and being able to play along with others. Everything is playable in a C or G tuning, though a couple of tunes need a D tuning to be fully accurate note wise, but there are some useful work arounds given if you don’t have C#s! Some tunes have two versions, for smaller or larger harps, and suggestions are given to accommodate different sizes. Fingerings and dampings are included, and all techniques and abbreviations are explained. Let’s go play with others in the sessions!
